The poppy plant is a biennial plant originating in Eastern Mediterranean and Asia. It is a favorite spice, despite the fact that it seems to have been designed specifically to stick in our teeth. The whole poppy seeds are widely used as seasoning and for decorating many bakery products. The seeds are an excellent source of B vitamins, such as thiamin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin, niacin and folic acid. Many of these vitamins help with the metabolism of the substrate especially of fat and carbohydrates. The poppy seeds contain adequate levels of metals, such as iron, copper, calcium, potassium, manganese, zinc and magnesium.
